Star WARs: A New Home

November 2, 2008

This is going to be a bit of a lengthy, up-front post to you all about WAAAGH! the blog, and I have to admit it makes me a bit nervous to write it. No, I’m not quitting the blogging scene or changing to WHAMMO! A Champions Online Blog or anything, but there’s a change coming soon in WAAAGH!’s future.

A month or so ago I was contacted by the folks over at GameRiot, who were interested in bringing me and my blog on board with their new Warhammer portal. It’s not the first time a company’s approached me for something like this, and my response was “Probably not, but I’m willing to hear you out.” Over the next few weeks, I went back and forth with their people about their proposal, which ultimately has turned into an acceptance on my part. Within the next week or so, WAAAGH! will be moving (sort of, the old URLs and everything will continue to work just fine) to their place, and I’ll continue to cover WAR as usual.

“He’s mad!” you say. “He’s selling out to The Man!” This sort of reaction, and personal reservations about protecting the content and spirit and freedom of the blog, was what held me back. But in truth, this is a pretty good deal — for me and for you. Before you get your pitchforks and torches, let me share with you exactly why.

1. I enjoy writing a blog and would (and have) do it for free. I didn’t start blogging to make money at all. But that said, I’m not adverse to it, especially with Syp Jr. set to be born next year. Moving to GameRiot would give me a cut of advertising banner revenue, which I can set aside for a college fund for the kid or whatever else we may need. As a dad-to-be, I’d be a little stupid not to take advantage of this opportunity to help provide for my family while still doing something I love.

2. None of the ads are popups, and GameRiot doesn’t support adult content, gold sellers or farmers with their ads.

3. This was especially important to me: I retain FULL control over my content and blog. They have no editorial control or demands, other than cutting down on the nonstop stream of profanities that I utter (that’s a joke, there, at least the second part). If, in the future, I want to walk away, I can take the blog with me and do anything I like with it. I can write whatever I want, whenever I want, and feel no pressure other than just to do a good job.

4. GameRiot will offer me their services with technical help, graphic art, and doing PR to get more people to come read the blog. All good stuff.

5. All of the old URLs will continue to work, and the address waaagh.wordpress.com will redirect toward the new site.

So essentially, WAAAGH! is relocating to take advantage of an advertising program that is not intrusive, will offer me financial compensation, continue to provide you all with loads of free and unedited content, and give you guys even more community tools past comments. I’ve talked this over with my wife, my family (and my brother the lawyer, who scoured the contract for any hidden clauses), and several people in the WAR blogging community to make sure I wasn’t just doing this out of greed, but because it’s a good opportunity overall. And so far, everyone seems pretty supportive about it.

I don’t doubt that some of you guys may look down on me for this move, but I hope that most of you know that I wouldn’t do it unless I thought it was a very good move for the blog — not just myself and my wallet. If you have any questions or concerns, pop them into comments and I’ll try my best to answer them all.

  1. Makes sense to me Syp. Getting coin for doing what you like is never a bad thing.

You keep writing, I’ll keep commenting.

But if you start selling Syp brand Dwarven Soap on a Rope…I’m out.

  2. Congratulations sounds like a great opportunity.

  3. Why would this be bad? Congratulations, Syp

  4. Congrats man, if anyone looks down apun a well thought out & intelligent move like that, well. They can go ahead and go take a large one in the pooper.

  5. I’d buy the soap on a rope.

  6. Congratulations Syp. This sounds like a great opportunity for you.

  7. Good luck with it, I can’;t imagine it’ll make any difference (btw, my feed reader kept marking your posts as read, the only reason I haven’t been commenting more)

  8. It sounds great! I can’t understand why anyone would think badly of it. Well done and good luck!

  9. Congrats

  10. Go on, your readers trust you. This is by far best warhammer blog i have ever read and if it will stay like that, i will keep comming. And maybe time to time click on few banners to make Syp Jr. happy ;).

  11. I don’t know how much you’ll get out of the revenue on gameriot, but my guess is you could earn a lot more from this site.

I’m not offering anything cept a couple of tips so mail me if you’re interested.

  12. Sounds good to me Syp, congrats!!

  13. Good for you, if you keep control whats the problem anyhow!

  14. Congrats! I’ll keep reading as long as the writing stays the same quality and you keep the RSS feed showing full posts 🙂 good luck with this!

  15. Congrats for you, and be sure I’ll be still reading. 😉

  16. Sounds like a great opportunity

  17. Sounds like a great deal! Congrats!

  18. Congrats Man, as long as your true to your word and the content doesn’t change I see no reason why this would be a bad thing. I’ve read your blog for as long as I can remember and its part of my nightly routine. I’d even buy some Syp merchandise if you start to produce it :-p.

  19. Congrats, Syp! You’ve got a great blog. It sounds like a good opportunity.

  20. You know Gameriot is a division of Haliburton, right? Just checking
    🙂

  21. I think this is great. Thank you for letting me have my site on your blog roll….I kind of feel like I am friends with Waaagh royalty!

  22. You’ll never hear me accuse you of selling out if you keep the same perspective in your writing. Good luck over there! I’ve been approached by various portals as well, but I’m too damn lazy to follow up on the requests, and too lazy to blog regularly 🙂 I wish you much success!

  23. I’m happy for you. It sounds like a wonderful step to take for the blog. 🙂

  24. Nice job Syp!

  25. Thank you all — I deeply appreciate your support!

  26. Good jobbo! 🙂

  27. Grats Syp. Your blog’s really great. I’m not playing WAR anymore, but I’m always coming by your blog everyday. Keep it up!

Is Syp Jr. going to be an engineer?

  28. If this is what you wanted, then congrats. 🙂

  29. Congratulations!
    Syp Jr. would approve.

  30. There’s only one better thing than doing what you love, and that’s doing what you love and getting paid for it.

Congrats and best of luck to you, Syp!

  31. Thumbs up Syp, nice that you get this opportunity. And congratulations on you becoming a dad. 🙂

  32. Grats!! I was contacted buy them about a month before release but it just wasn’t for me. It sounds like a great deal for you and you sound like you looked deeply into it. And super gratz on a JR. Kids are wounderful! (I can say that, none of mine are teenagers:))

  33. Gratz Syp! As long as we continue to get a great quality blog with interesting content I’ll keep reading.

  34. Hey, just an FYI, I looked at their site, and there is a post advertising gold on the Order forum that has been there since October 23, I would say they are not very concerened about moderating their forums and you should be wary associating yourself with them from what I can tell.

    Good luck and God Bless.

  35. Congrats! – sounds like you have made good deal there.

Now, where can we get this soap on the rope?? And do u have any of those Syp wobblehead things?? 😉

  36. Sorry, it is under the general forum, not the order

  37. I think all the guys that have posted so far share the same feeling that I do about you Syp. This is by far the best blog I have read over the last…. well ever! as long as you keep up the good work (as is has always been), and you like what you do, that is all that matters. Congratulations man.

Next thing we hear is that Syp is going to be running for presidency. You’d have my vote btw =)

  38. I work at a place that blocks a lot of web sites. When WAR came out I was starved for information I could read at work. Your site is my favorate one and has been a very good resource for all the other sites I have enjoyed reading.

I am sure there are those that would give you a hard time but if they where given the same deal, I am sure would jump at the opportunity.

I just hope my company is not smart enough to notice GameRiot and block it on me.

  39. Congratz Syp, nothing wrong with what your doing. I fully understand. Only down fall is I will not beable now to read your blog for my lunch break at work. Company computer has Gameriot blocked. Oh well gives me something to do when I get home.

  40. @ Griz and Had – Have you guys checked out Google Reader? It’s what I use. You subscribe to all the blogs you like, and Google Reader compiles the new posts as soon as they’re written. I doubt that’d be blocked by your work filter.

  41. I must say – you already have a great reader base, though their PR may be of a benefit to you I would think you could do better for yourself and retain control over the types of advertising on your blog by doing it yourself. You make all the money and have complete control.

Otherwise, congrats man. It was bound to happen.

  42. WORK FIREWALLS… So I just hope that many of us that spend our work days reading your blog will still be able to access it when it moves… if it doesn’t then I guess that will be it for me and Waaagh because when I get home it’s pretty much time w/ the lady, some Warhammer online, food, and bed…

  43. I agree with the firewall stuff. I am thrilled to death I can read this on breaks at work, my work blocks 95% of websites that interest me. After work, no time for it. It will be a loss for me also.

  44. Just make sure we can still respect you in the morning, mkay? And good luck! 😀

  45. BLOCKED… yep gameriot is blocked for me at work…

  46. Hey Syp thanks for the info on google reader. I’ll try that out when you make the move. Once again keep up the good work. Hope to have a chance one day to battle with you after all you are a guild mate and all.

  47. Syp, congrats, man. I think your move over to GameRiot is a great thing and I wish you and your new family all of the best. It’s not called selling out to the man…it’s called making a smart business decision!

  48. sell out! you workin for da man now!

    😛

    nice one, syp!
long time lurker, first time commenter-er…thought this was a good time to say nice work so far, and good luck for the future!

and for anyone who is having trouble getting onto war related sites in work, let me share a little knowledge…

    – go to google and search the site you want on.
    – copy the URL
    – go to “language tools” on the front page. (it’s the third link down, in small text next to the search bar)
    – then translate the site.

i usually translate from chinese to english, as there are never any chinese characters on the site to mess up sentex etc.

you’ll often find links and layout are a bit messed up: but all the info is there!
you can use the warhammer alliance forums this way.

    sorry for the epic comment!

    cheers, syp!

  49. I dont see what’s so wrong with selling out as long as you get to continue doing what it is you do with out any sort of regulations. Nothing wrong if you were doing this out of greed or self propelment. As long as you still maintain creative power over your work, then good for you!
