Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya, tomorrow! You’re only a day away!

September 13, 2008

Is it… actually almost here? Am I hallucinating, perhaps after licking a particularly bright and vividly-colored frog? I suppose “yes” to both, but the frog thing was totally not my fault. It’s what happens when you pass out in an Amazonian rain forest exhibit at the zoo when you’ve had a face-to-face encounter with a python and then the little froggies hop all over your face.

So. Yes. Tomorrow. First thing in the morning, the servers switch from “beta” to “live, baby, live!” and millions of WAR fans squee their pants and get ready to plow in through the front gates. Of course, for North America, there’s three launch days next week: Sunday (Head Start #1), Tuesday (Head Start #2), and Thursday (Official Launch Date). While the HS is a great little perk for us pre-orders, on Mythic’s side they should be useful to shake out any crippling last-minute bugs or problems with the servers before the Thursday launch. I’m not saying people won’t cry out in anguish if they have to take the servers down for the first part of next week — they will, and I will be keening among them — but it gives them a bit of a buffer before the hard launch of Thursday’s massive influx.

I wanted to say something inspirational today, perhaps up on top of a soapbox with a riding crop in my hand and a fluttering flag of Order behind me. I wanted to say just how involving it’s been, blogging about Warhammer Online for the past half year, and how I really never expected to be writing this much or to be anything more than a blip on the WAR community radar. I wanted to express my profound happiness that through this blog, I’ve gotten to meet some truly excellent bloggers and players, some of which I now call “friends”. I wanted to cheer on the WAR community as it’s grown from a quiet little niche in the web to a roaring monster of blogs, sites, forums, wikis, databases and podcasts.

I wanted to do all these things today, but I’m going to put those thoughts on hold for just a bit to extend a hand of thanks to the folks at Mythic. Call it butt-kissing if you will, but I was raised to say “thank you” when somebody works hard so that you can be entertained. Mythic is not doing this out of charity, of course, but I also recognize that there are a LOT easier ways to make a buck than creating one of the most complex types of games that history’s ever known. They didn’t have to do this. They didn’t have to put up with a finicky community, with fans who are famous for turning ugly when something goes wrong, with public scrutiny and long hours and the knowledge that they’d never be able to make everyone happy all the time. Just some of us — but to those, they aimed to please.

So Mark, Josh, Jeff, Carrie, Justin — to each and every member of the Mythic crew, from the receptionist to the interns to the PR guys behind the cameras — I want to say thank you. You’re not perfect, nor is WAR, but you both are definitely excellent in my eyes. Keep up the good work, and we’ll be supporting you 100%.

    Amen to that !

  2. Hear hear.

And from those of us currently and inexplicably unable to log into the game due to some cryptic “Authentication Failed – Application will now close” error, if you don’t get it fixed by tomorrow, we’ll burn you at the stake.

Lovingly, of course, and with much adulation.

  3. I support this sentiment.

  5. Well said.

Also thanks to you Syp for your great blog. Only wished I’d found it sooner. See all you European players on the battlefield!

  7. You accidentally missed out the main man in my eyes… Paul Barnett, his enthusiasm pulled me and many more in.

  8. Awww, thanks Syp!

And thanks for being my number 1 news source on all that is Warhammer Online… well, other than the office, that is. 😛
