We Were A One Time Teenage Drama Queen

July 13, 2008

Just a short observation on human behavior — we are absolutely, positively addicted to drama. Not the “good” kind of drama (if there is such a thing), but the dark kind, the kind where something’s gone wrong, someone messed up and good, there’s been an accident or a disaster or a controversial action taken. We flock to it, while at the same time remaining above it in our minds. We have taken the role of a judgmental observer, feeding on the drama and regurgitating it to others with our own thoughts mixed in.

I’m not immune to this, and neither are you. It’s why MMO devs take fan outrage and rants with such liberal doses of salt — they know that people are usually willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but they’re also constantly poised to leap all over any drama, real or perceived, if it’s unleashed.

Just a thought for this weekend. How much of this is us rationally analyzing and constructively criticizing these decisions, and how much is hand-flinging drama feeding?

  1. Lol! I love the title and picture of the sign. I guess some people might want to take their 6″ pumps off for awile to give their calves a rest for E3.

  2. Syp, man, you’re on the money.

  3. Indeed Syp. My brain hurts from trying to read anything being posted on WHA right now.

  4. Syp, Some of it is us being drama whores, but I don’t think its fair to say we shouldn’t be frustrated or mad or sad about this just because we can’t think rationally about drama. We have a right, if we have been a true fan to the game, to get angry (and cry a little) when the Devs cut something as large as classes and 4 capital cities. True fans of the game are hurt by the game and frustrated, Drama Whores get ranty and start ape shitting on forums.
